New Sculpture at Patrick John Mills Gallery

The upcoming vernissage of Patrick John Mills solo show, Raw Naked Soul, will feature scores of his paintings, from bathroom mirror size to half a garage door size and everything in between.

Welcoming you to the gallery on Thursday, November 3, in front of the building, will be a new sculpture by Jack Stekelenburg entitled, Speak No Evil.

How apropos. A raw, naked soul, perforce, can only utter the truth.

Forget bucolic and dull, Patrick John Mills presents his solo show at the gallery this coming week, entitled, Raw Naked Soul.

The vernissage is Thursday, November 3/11, 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

The gallery is undergoing expansion. Come and see how the renos are unfolding.

SCULZ go Wilde

Or rather, some of them went today to be part of a Halloween window display at Wilde's, a store on Bank St, one of Ottawa's main drags.

While not in a gallery and not on a wall, not in a magazine or newspaper, having the SCULZ in a storefront on a busy downtown street does mean that they get looked at, noticed, and isn't that one of our aims, to be recognized as artists in our community?

Now Wilde's is a gay male emporium and I, a flaming heterosexual female yet I chose to offer my art for display here. I knew that neither Birk's nor The Bay would clamour to show the SCULZ.

Sometimes, it's a good idea to choose possible venues for one's work rather than go after what might be termed, an impossible dream.

Nonetheless, saying this, I would imagine had I given it a try and taken the red devil SCULZ to an upscale jewelery story and suggested that they hang strings of pearls or stands of diamonds from its horns, they might have been talked into it.

After all, we are upon the eve of Halloween.

Who Is Lucy? Mystery Artist in Ottawa

Is it Lucy or Lucie? And who is she? Who is the artist? Maybe someone from Patrick John Mills Gallery?

Odd to see a painting attached to a telephone pole on a busy street in downtown Ottawa but there it was this afternoon and again, when I returned five hours later, still there.

I, of course, had to answer the question, Who is Lucy?, the only way a child of the sixties could. Lucy refers to the Beatles song, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.

In Case You're Wondering...

Sometimes, we might think that there is a fine line between art and craft. My take on it is if you do something crafty, make one or two things, paste a few baubles here and there, splatter some paint on some barn board or turn your palette or paint smock into something to hang on your wall, it, as in one, may very well be craft.

However, do it over and over again, refining your technique each time, thinking of new ways to Épater la bourgeoisie do your craft ten or twenty, do it one hundred times, and then surely, it is art.

Some of these artful SCULZ will be on display starting Saturday, October 22/11 at Gypsy&Co Vintage Boutique and Cafe, 209 Gilmour Street at Elgin in Ottawa, Canada. The shop is open from 11:00 am until 6:00 pm and Halloween is the shop owner's favourite time of the year so look for an arresting decor as we edge closer to that most hallowed of evenings.
